We noticed at the Mobile World Congress: the big trend of 2019 is the democratization of the triple photo sensor at the back. Should this be seen as a sign that Huawei was ahead of its time with the 2018 P20 Pro? We will not issue this opinion. Moreover, with his brand new P30 Pro, Huawei is again pioneered by offering him not three but four rear sensors. All in the service of a photography experience never seen from a smartphone.

Huawei P30 Pro: the most versatile photophone on the market

Equipped with the latest SoC Kirin 980 and 8GB of RAM, the P30 Pro is a little power bomb – even if it is nicely distanced by the Exynos 9820 from Samsung and especially Snapdragon 855 from Qualcomm. It is nonetheless a very powerful smartphone, and especially very energy efficient.

A boon, because with its huge battery of 4,200 mAh, the P30 Pro is able to hold the dragee high to all the competition in terms of autonomy. According to our tests, the P30 Pro is able to hold more than 2 days without having to cross the path of a USB cable. And even if this time were to be shortened, the fast charge at 40 W can recover 70% of charge in 30 minutes.

Huawei P30 Pro: Review

The P30 Pro is an awesome smartphone. Better designed than any other smartphone ever released from Huawei factories, it also carries significant innovations in photography. The most impressive being its 5x zoom without loss of quality, and the ability to further stretch the focal length up to a 50x digital zoom.

4. OnePlus 7 Pro: the choice of writing

– Insufficient outdoor lighting

OnePlus is upsetting its habits this year. Accustomed to only release a new flagship every six months, the Chinese manufacturer awards us in 2019 two distinct models, which OnePlus 7 Pro is logically spearhead.

The smartphone of all superlatives therefore, since it does not just wear pre-existing technologies but to innovate. But, true to its principles of always, OnePlus does not ask us to break the piggy bank – on the contrary. While the current market does not hesitate to break the glass ceiling of the thousand euros, the OnePlus 7 Pro is trading from 709 €.

One of the most innovative smartphones of the year

OnePlus has decided to capitalize on its screen this year. With a huge 6.67-inch OLED panel with no edges and unprecedented 90Hz display frequency, the Chinese smartphone offers an unprecedented viewing and viewing experience. A “total” screen, which occupies more than 88% of the front surface of the phone, and no notch or “drop of water” comes to disfigure. The reason ? OnePlus has made the choice – like other manufacturers before him – to integrate its front camera in a retractable mechanism called “pop-up” on the top of the chassis.

Logical reversal of this overpower: the autonomy of OnePlus 7 Pro is not quite at the level of that of its direct competitors. Let’s get along well: it’s quite possible to have a good day and a half with a lot of energy. Beyond, it’s less sure. Fortunately, thanks to OnePlus’ new 30W fast charge, it’s possible to get as much as 57% juice in just 30 minutes (count for 1:20 for a full charge).

Finally, OnePlus continues to progress in photo at each iteration. Equipped with three separate sensors (standard, telephoto and wide-angle), the OnePlus 7 Pro offers globally satisfactory results – if not a white balance to pick it up on the widest lens. OnePlus 7 Pro: Review

Hard not to be seduced by the proposals of the OnePlus 7 Pro, let alone at such an affordable price. Really impressive, its 90 Hz screen redefines our perception of the fluidity of a screen. And by combining this with the performance of the Snapdragon 855, we get a recipe as convincing as it is novel.

If it is a little disappointing on the autonomy, this one is largely compensated by the fast recharge of which the smartphone benefits. It must be kept in mind that the OnePlus 7 Pro is not a smartphone to recommend to those who hate XXL phones. With its huge screen of 6.67 inches, the OP7 Pro is impossible to handle with one hand.

5. Samsung Galaxy S10e: finally a flagship for one-handed use

For the 10 years of its Galaxy range, Samsung wanted to add a new reference to its usual premium smartphone duo. The Galaxy S10e is not a “sub” Galaxy S10, quite the contrary. It takes the same data sheet, while offering users looking for a more compact smartphone … and cheaper!

At a time when the majority of smartphones embark screens of more than 6 inches, it becomes more and more complex for users to find a mobile one hand. With its Galaxy S10e, Samsung speaks directly to those for whom smartphone rhymes with compactness. The builder also borrows a royal route, where he seems to be the only serious candidate at this price level. The only other premium smartphone displaying a diagonal of 5.8 inches being … the iPhone XS, sold 300 € more.

Samsung Galaxy S10e: when compactness and power go hand-in-hand

We wrote: the Galaxy S10e takes the main part of the technical sheet of its big brothers the Galaxy S10 and S10 +. Only the on-board RAM goes from 8 to 6 GB, which does not seem to unduly impact the performance calculated during our tests – which remain excellent and worthy of a high-end in 2019. But unlike the more expensive models, the Galaxy S10e has a flat screen, as opposed to the curved S10 and S10 +. A choice that promotes the grip of the device, and further improves the compactness of this small format. Especially since the slab, it meets all the criteria of excellence to which we accustomed Samsung. Very bright, it also enjoys endless contrast and HDR10 + compatibility for an optimal video viewing experience. Also, the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor here gives way to a more conventional lateral model, but also more efficient. A height! But the Galaxy S10e, if it takes the strengths of other models, also appropriates their faults. It’s impossible not to point out a disappointing autonomy, and the lack of fast charging, where the vast majority of the competition is making efforts on this point. At the rear, the Galaxy S10e has not three but two cameras offering great versatility. Instead of the traditional telephoto lens, Samsung has chosen to give its small format an ultra wide-angle lens with a 123 ° field of view. What to indulge comfortably in landscape photography! The latest Samsung is also very comfortable on video, thanks to the help of an excellent optical stabilizer.

Samsung Galaxy S10e: Review

Lovers of smartphones with dimensions “human” will find in this Galaxy S10e their champion. Very well designed, it is perfectly manipulable with one hand, and thus arises as the only high-end smartphone to be below the bar of 6 inches.

Because the Galaxy S10e is not a “S10 light”. Taking advantage of the same technical coating as its big brothers, it will offer you an experience of navigation and optimal game. Be careful however to its autonomy: the big defect of all the innovations of Samsung.

6. Xiaomi Mi 9: a performance monster at a very sweet price:

Only seven months after the excellent Mi 8, Xiaomi draws the Mi 9. A smartphone once again labeled less than 500 €, which offers absolutely everything that one is entitled to expect from a high-end phone in early 2019. OnePlus has big problems to be made.

The differences with the previous model are so blatant that it is hard to believe that only seven months separate them. For his Mi 9, Xiaomi put the dishes in the big. Under-screen fingerprint sensor, trio of cameras, wireless charging at 20 W … So much comfort improvement, plus the all-new Snapdragon 855: the ultimate mobile platform in 2019.

The fastest Android smartphone this beginning of the year

Engraved in 7 nm, the Snapdragon 855 gives the Xiaomi Mi 9 crazy performances, as well as an optimal energy management. Thanks to its tripartite architecture (a high-performance core, 3 high-performance cores and 4 efficient cores), it is able to operate progressive power surges and therefore not to overcollect your battery.

Battery which, by the way, can also be quieted by the addition of a full dark mode, integrated natively in MIUI10. Coupled with the magnificent 6.39-inch AMOLED display (2340 x 1080 pixels, 401 ppi), this mode lets you see the full depth of black tones while saving the camera’s charge.

But even if you come crashing, the Mi 9 is equipped with the latest fast charging technologies. It is compatible with QuickCharge 4+, allowing a fast charge up to 27 W allowing to regain 50% of autonomy in 30 minutes only. Better: Xiaomi’s new flagship inaugurates wireless charging support at 20W. Put your smartphone on the base, and it will only take 90 minutes to go from 0 to 100%.

Because of the battery, you will need it to make the most of the three photo sensors located on the back of the camera. A wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens and an ultra wide-angle lens work together to give you stunning shots in any situation. Very versatile, the Mi 9 is also comfortable in low light, where it produces very convincing results. The video is not left out, and the stabilized camera of the smartphone allows you to shoot in UHD at 60 frames per second without problem.

Our Review:

Xiaomi has largely revised its copy (already excellent) to offer us at the beginning of this year one of our favorite smartphones. Ticking all the boxes of what is expected of a high-end phone, it still appears under the 500 € mark. A hush of technology for this price range.

All these elements that make us say that the battle will be tough this year between Xiaomi and OnePlus. Two troublemakers who redouble their efforts to break the price, while putting on the market killer flagship always more powerful.

7. Honor View 20: the first smartphone with a screen pierced from the market

Merits:

+ The inevitably more discreet notch

+ Excellent performance

+ Autonomy of thunder

De-Merits:

– An anecdotal 3D camera

– A flagship without AMOLED

– No wireless charging

This is the smartphone that opened the ball flagship 2019, and what entry into matter! The Honor View 20 is simply the first smartphone to grab the fashion of the “pierced screen” to turn away from the eternal notches that allow our smartphones to have larger display areas.

A proposal of the most innovative, which is coupled with a more original design. Clearly claiming her attachment to the youngest, Honor signs here a smartphone with bright colors and hypnotic back coating for a convincing result.

Screen pierced … but LCD

Unfortunately at the beginning of 2019, only Samsung seems to be able to make AMOLED panels pierced. Honor has had to settle for an LCD IPS which, although very well made, does not reach the degree of perfection and the infinite contrasts of the competing technology. A black dot for a phone at this price, but still allows Honor to offer a smartphone whose screen covers nearly 92% of the front panel! A record for a smartphone notch, and necessarily a great asset for lovers of video content and games.

In terms of performance, the Honor View 20 ships the ultimate Huawei: the Kirin 980. It’s simple: at the time of our test, the View 20 was simply the fastest Android smartphone on the market. Needless to say that the navigation is an exemplary fluidity, and no application or video game will be likely to put on the kneecaps. Especially since it comes with 6 or 8 GB of RAM, as well as a liquid cooling system guaranteeing optimal heat dissipation.

The Honor View 20 is also the first smartphone in the world to feature a 48 megapixel camera. A superb optics from Sony, which unfortunately produces results at the height of its resolution in the Ultra Clarity mode – requiring a pose of several seconds. The addition of a 3D camera is all that is more gadget, given the small number of applications currently mobilizing.

On the autonomy finally, hard to find fault with the Honor View 20. With its battery of 4000 mAh, the smartphone holds the dragée high the huge majority of the competition. With optimal energy management enabled by the Kirin 980, the View 20 is able to stay awake for nearly two full days!

Our views about Honor View 20:

The Honor View 20 has played the card of innovation to be displayed at nearly 600 €. A rate that we considered rather poorly fixed, including the lack of AMOLED screen, therefore of fingerprint sensor under the screen but also wireless charging.

However, impossible to question its relentless performance and autonomy XXL. The Honor View 20 is an excellent smartphone that, in our opinion, has just been launched on the market a bit too expensive.

8. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: the ultra-premium slide smartphone

Merits:

+ Part rather solid photo

+ An original and solid slide system

+ Superbly designed

The lessers

– Very heavy and bulky smartphone

– Photos in AI mode too much contrasted

A few months after its competitors Vivo Nex S and Honor Magic 2, Xiaomi also draws his vision of the smartphone slider. An ingenious system that allows the screen to occupy nearly 94% of the front of the phone!

For his new flagship, Xiaomi has set the package, and signs one of the best designed smartphones he has ever made. A true rise of range which is felt as well at the level of the packing – very neat and luxurious – as in the finishes of the apparatus.

All aluminum and glass, this large smartphone 6.39 inches nevertheless suffers from an overweight of the most disabling. With its 218 grams on the scale, this smartphone directly enters the heavyweight category of this comparison.

A smartphone while on screen

Choosing to let its competitors struggle with notches or screens pierced, Xiaomi offers with its Mi Mix 3 a sliding system leaving plenty of room for its huge screen to flourish. And what a screen! AMOLED type, this one displays a definition of 2340 x 1080 pixels for a density of 403 pixels per inch. A great companion for reading – both textual and video – but also a formidable weapon for gamers.

In terms of performance, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 embeds neither more nor less than the most popular chip of 2018: the Snapdragon 845. A SoC that we start to know as it has equipped among the best smartphones year. Its eight 2.8 GHz cores and its Adreno 630 GPU will be enough to run any game from the Play Store, and will ensure a navigation fluidity exemplary. Here, it is 6 GB of RAM that will come to support him, and the storage (unfortunately not extensible) is provided by a chip of 128 GB.

Finally, the photo part is perfectly satisfactory, and offers shots that, without being exemptions, show a great rise of Xiaomi in the field.

Side autonomy, the Mi Mix 3 does not demerit but, with a battery of 3200 mAh only, it will give up fatally before other smartphones better equipped. Do not worry: he will still hold a good day and a half!

Our opinion on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3

Displayed at 529 € when it was released, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 particularly seduced us for its premium look and extremely generous screen. We regret a lack of risk taking on the rest of the technical sheet, but we still welcome the initiative to offer an alternative to the eternal smartphones notch for lovers of the all-screen.

9. Redmi Note 7: a no-fault around 230 €

The Redmi Note have always been true champions in their price range. This Redmi Note 7 is no exception, and does better than its predecessor in absolutely every field. Only regret: he still does not like photography. We can not have everything !

The most enduring smartphone at less than 200 €

Redmi learned from his mistakes. The Redmi Note 6 Pro had disappointed, especially because of a huge notch, which is poorly managed by MIUI. This year, the Redmi Note 7 opts for a U-shaped notch, which allows the gigantic 6.3-inch screen to occupy nearly 81% of the front panel.

An IPS LCD screen that also displays a definition of 2280 x 1080 pixels for a resolution of 409 dpi, and which has especially an excellent brightness with 500 nits. In other words: the screen remains legible in all circumstances. This is great news for moviegoers, since the Redmi Note 7 has the Widevine L1 certificate making it possible to play HD content (Canal Play, Molotov, Netflix, etc.).

Video game lovers will not be left out. The Snapdragon 660 that powers the Redmi Note 7 delivers strong performance for an entry-level smartphone. All games, even the most greedy, can be launched in a reasonable level of quality, without compromising the comfort of the user.

And nothing to spoil, the huge battery of 4000 mAh offers a battery life just never seen in a smartphone at this price. Thanks to the support of the processor’s autonomous hearts, the Redmi Note 7 is able to hold more than 50 hours without flinching! A record.

Our Review on the Redmi Note 7

Available in a 3 + 32GB and 4 + 64GB version, the Redmi Note 7 is among the best compromise between performance and market autonomy. This entry-level smartphone makes little compromise, and ticks the most important boxes of a phone sold less than 200 €.

We regret just his lack of versatility in photography, including its 48-megapixel sensor that is absolutely not used in the clichés produced by the smartphone. A non-problem, for those who seek above all a phone capable of holding several days without having to be recharged.
