Camera Quality and Technological superiority of IPhone XR,Read experts reviews:

On September 12th, this is not one, nor two new iPhone that Apple has presented to the public, but three distinct models. A new trio that breaks definitively with the “old school” design sported by the devices of the brand since the iPhone 6, and which definitely embraces the gestural and full screen. Released on October 26, the iPhone XR is probably the most interesting model unveiled by Apple – because cheaper, while shipping a technological panel to pale more expensive versions. So what are the results after a week of use?

This is a smartphone taking over the bulk of the technological paraphernalia of the iPhone XS, while being offered in 6 colors and especially 300 € cheaper than his big brother.

We tell you straightforward, even to sabotage reading the rest of this test: the iPhone XR makes the purchase of an iPhone XS an unjustifiable whim, so he brilliantly notes the number balancing between excellence and management costs.

The iPhone XR is available since October 26,2019 from $899 USD in the following colors: red, yellow, white, coral, black and blue.

iPhone XR: Technology

Like its predecessor iPhone XS, the XR model – whose definition is still unknown – has the latest SoC born from the Cupertino factories: the A12 Bionic. A chip engraved in 7 nm which, as we have seen, offers ridiculously high performance. Moreover, the iPhone XR differs from other models by an intermediate size between a classic model and “Max”, and a few concessions from a purely technical point of view.

The iPhone XR Specifications:

A 6.1-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1792 x 828 pixels at a resolution of 326 dpi covering approximately 79% of the front panel

SoC A12 Bionic: 6 hearts at 2.49GHz, 4 of which are dedicated to low-greedy tasks, and 2 for performance; NPU new generation

3 GB of RAM

64, 128 or 256 GB of internal storage

2942mAh battery

IP67 certified against immersion (30 minutes, 1 meter) and dust

Dorsal camera: 12 megapixel sensor with stabilized lens opening at f / 1.8 (26mm focal length)

7 megapixel front camera opening at f / 2.2

The items in the list with an asterisk represent the differences with the iPhone XS. Some are minimal (IP67 against IP68, 3 GB of RAM against 4 GB of RAM, 256 GB of maximum storage), while others may be more impacting (LCD versus OLED, a single camera, more impressive battery).

In the box, nothing new: we find the uncompromising Lightning 5W charger, a pair of EarPods Lightning earphones and that’s it. As on the most expensive model, Apple no longer deigns to provide the Lightning / Jack adapter for your wired headsets. It will equip you for 10 € more.

A smartphone too big for its own good

There was talk in our test of the iPhone XS of the increasingly luxurious appearance of Apple devices. All glass and metal, the most expensive smartphones of the brand are real luxury items, irreproachable design.

Also, at first glance, difficult to distinguish the differences between the two models. The design inaugurated by the iPhone X in 2017 is here rehabilitated for a slightly larger chassis (6.1 inches against 5.8), while maintaining the same aspect ratio of the 19.5: 9 screen. On the other hand, we notice that the borders are only slightly thicker than on the model released in September; the slab covering 79% of the front surface of the phone, against 82.9% for the XS. In fact, these small differences are imperceptible to the eye. But it must be admitted that at the height of its 6.1 inches, the iPhone XR is more difficult to handle than its predecessor. We are at the crossroads between an iPhone XS and an iPhone XS Max (6.5 inches), and the use of one-handed smartphone is almost impossible – depending on the size of your pogne, of course. A detail that can put off more than one allergic to XXL phones. The generous 3.6cm notch remains, and allows the phone to do without Home button to also offer the unlocking facial recognition in 3D – Face ID.

Still, in terms of quality of manufacture, we are on something very close to what Apple has proposed on its last two models. Circled in matt aluminum (whose color varies depending on the model chosen), the iPhone XR has the same glass back as its predecessors. The side faces are also identical in all respects (right ignition buttons, volume and silence on the left), but the lower face respects the symmetry of speaker grids on both sides of the Lightning port. A detail that the abandonment on the iPhone XS had ticked the most keen of us (me first).

But the biggest difference is obviously the most visible: the presence of a single photo module on the back of the phone. Apple chooses here to resume the perfectly round and generous design of the lens of the iPhone 8, and keep the placement at the top left of the back of the XR. Interesting point: once placed on a flat surface, the presence of a single lens makes the phone much less unstable than the iPhone X and XS with their elongated sensors.

Slightly heavier than the iPhone XS with its 194 g, the iPhone XR has some answers. But we expect no less than a phone as bulky.

Apple introduced first time LCD IPS “Liquid Retina” for the first, and OLED “Super Retina HD”

This is one of the important differences between the iPhone XR and the iPhone XS: its screen. LCD IPS “Liquid Retina” for the first, and OLED “Super Retina HD” for the second. 1792 x 828 pixels (326 dpi) for one, 2436 x 1125 pixels (458 dpi) for the other. So, certainly, in the ranks of pure numbers, the iPhone XR is beaten by its premium cousin, but as well said by Phil Schiller, marketing boss of Apple, “if you can not see the pixels, at a certain point the numbers do not mean anything anymore, they are totally arbitrary “.

Difficult to contradict this good old Phil on it so much, side by side, it seems impossible to distinguish the slightest difference between the LCD screen of the iPhone XR and the OLED of the iPhone XS. I had to stick the retina to both screens to distinguish a tiny lack of finesse on the pixels of the iPhone “low end”. Very concretely: in use, impossible to take the LCD screen of the XR failing.

So obviously, the main difference between OLED and LCD technology is a higher contrast ratio (the so-called “infinite blacks”), improved responsiveness and reduced power consumption (black pixels are simply off). Very nice promises on paper, however, that are almost imperceptible without lending themselves to the exercise of colorimetric calculation, sounding and other techniques to determine if the delta E of the screen is close to “perfection”.

More prosaic, we prefer to tell you that if you are afraid that the screen of the iPhone XR is ill-defined, you can reassure yourself by saying that it has the same pixel density as an iPhone 8, which it even has a pixel density three times higher than what is found on a 40-inch (approximately 110-dpi) 4K display. You then have to ask yourself the following question: do you need a pocket screen better than your TV?

Comparison with iPhone XS:

As we have seen, the iPhone XR also ships Apple’s A12 Bionic chip. The only difference that is likely to impact the speed of the device is the presence of 3 GB of RAM against 4 GB on the XS.

Only here … after a test on the application AnTuTu Benchmark, it appears that the iPhone XR is faster than iPhone XS, while shipping a gigabyte of RAM less. The iPhone XR records 368,637 points on AnTuTu, against 365,896 in our iPhone XS test, raising it to the rank of the fastest iOS device in the world.

In concrete terms, this means that no task will ever hurt the speed of the phone. Apps run at an indecent speed, multitasking is more responsive than ever before, and you’re sure to run any game on your iPhone without having to cut corners on graphics quality.

Higher Battery Capacity:

The iPhone XR has a slightly larger battery than the iPhone XS (2942mAh against 2658mAh). Thing allowed by the more generous chassis of the device.

Also this battery more consistent allows the iPhone XR to rise to the level of the iPhone XS Max in terms of autonomy. After a week of use, it was found that the device held the charge from 8am to 1pm the next day, with a daily average of 5:30 use. Use that was shared between watching videos on Netflix, long sessions of video games and even longer sessions of infinite scrolling in the depths of Twitter and Instagram.

So we are in the high average of what has ever proposed Apple in terms of autonomy – his shot always.

Regarding the charge however, Apple remains faithful to its mediocrity with more than 3:30 infusion to pass the iPhone XR from 0 to 100%. Note however that it is only 14 minutes longer than the iPhone XS, which takes him nearly half a day less. The fast charge (possible with the purchase of a 55 € charger and a 25 € cable) as well as the wireless charge have not been tested.

Photography :

We still have to tackle the photo part of the iPhone XR. We have seen: this smartphone sold € 300 cheaper than the iPhone XS has only one single photo module. However, the Portrait mode, which allows the shooting of photographs with a nice background blur, is present on the smartphone.

We will go on to the fact that Apple has always made us understand that two cameras were necessary to do this, and then we propose the thing on a smartphone being devoid; we are closer to an inconsistency. Let’s go directly to the tests in situ.

At first glance, it’s hard to tell the difference between two shots taken with each camera. As usual, Apple offers a photograph with absolutely natural treatment, without excessive saturation or delirious sharpness as some Chinese competitors. Also the usual photographs are perfectly similar to those made from a more expensive model. On the other hand, the latter will be slightly more detailed (better defined leaves, unevenness in more visible buildings, etc.). Nothing visible if you do not zoom in 100%.

Speaking of zoom elsewhere, there is a crucial difference between the two models. Recall that the second objective that equips the iPhone 7 Plus, 8 Plus, X, XS and XS Max is a telephoto lens corresponding to a focal length of 55mm. In other words, it zooms in without damaging the quality of the image – something that the iPhone XR is unable to do, by being devoid. As on any smartphone, it is still possible to zoom digitally, but it will greatly affect the quality of your shot.

Regarding Portrait mode, it is important to specify a detail: it only works on people. You read correctly: impossible to create a bokeh around your cat or your trophy proudly won at a petanque competition, iPhone XR will refuse. The reason is quite simple: the background blur is entirely generated by artificial intelligence which, for the moment and for some unknown reason because the competition does it very well, does not recognize anything other than the boils human. Even more surprising that third-party applications like Halide for example, go beyond this problem and offer Portrait mode regardless of the subject of your photo. We imagine that a future update of iOS will take full advantage of this mode Portrait which, by the way, is at least as convincing as on other models of iPhone.

Particularly convincing, and especially for one thing in particular: Portrait mode of the iPhone XR retains the same focal length as for any other photograph. See instead: on an iPhone with a dual lens photo, the iPhone automatically switches to the Zoom module, requiring to retreat from its subject. The iPhone XR, on the other hand, retains a focal length of about 26mm, and thus makes it possible not to have to reposition itself to trigger. Finally, the setting of the depth of field is possible, and now even a priori trigger.

Side selfie, nothing to report particular – the iPhone XR taking again the same TrueDepth module that other smartphones in its range.

In video finally, the iPhone XR does not have to blush in front of his eldest, and offers stabilized recording up to 4K at 60 frames per second. It is able to produce slow motion up to 240 frames per second as long as we reduce the resolution to 1080p.

iPhone XR: Our Experts Reviews

Here we are bothered to issue a verdict on iPhone XR otherwise better, most often comparable to the model sold 300 € more. Maybe if it was out after the model tested today, we would have been tougher with Apple. Because in the state: nothing, or almost, justifies that we prefer an iPhone XS to an iPhone XR, if it is – I grant you – its size. But in Apple’s pricing policy, this is the first time that we have to spend more money to get a smaller device.

More autonomous, faster (!) And clearly as beautiful as its peers the XS and XS Max, the iPhone XR has it all. Especially since its tariff of 859 € places it exactly in the same tariff as Samsung Galaxy S9 or Google Pixel 3.

As we have seen, the small differences that exist between the new iPhone are for the most part only powder in the eyes. Also Apple creates a precedent here. We will not remember the brand as the one who dared – the first time – sell a phone to more than 1000 €. We will now keep in mind the brand that, with the iPhone XR, has proposed one of the best quality-price ratio of the high-end segment. This one is thus granted an additional half-star in his note. Sort of “punishment” against an iPhone XS, for € 300 extra, does not offer much more.
