Authorities are looking for a West Point cadet who was last seen at the U.S. Military Academy on Friday — and an assault rifle is also missing.

The cadet, who has not been identified, did not show up for a military skills competition this weekend. He may have taken his M4 rifle, but officials say he does not have ammunition and does not pose a threat to the public.

However, the academy said in a statement that the member of the class of 2021 may “be a danger to himself.”

“West Point is operating under normal conditions with an increased force protection status,” the academy said, according to the Army Times. “We have increased Military Police patrols at sporting events and across the Academy as a precautionary measure and to assist in safely locating the missing Cadet.”

He was last seen on the grounds at West Point at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday. A massive search began Saturday and continued throughout the weekend.

“I want to thank the local and state law enforcement agencies and emergency services for their tireless support,” said Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams, the academy superintendent. “We will continue to search with all means possible, on and off West Point. Safely locating the Cadet remains our focus and number one priority.”

Anyone who has information on the cadet’s whereabouts should contact the West Point Military Police at (845) 938-3333.
